Illinois has a big problem with illicit drug use. The fact that 70,378 people needed to seek help from an Illinois drug rehabilitation treatment center in 2009 demonstrates the enormity of the issue very well. In 2006, 112,368 people were arrested on drug charges. Because of all of these arrests, the state needed to increase its number of drug courts. As of 2007, Illinois had plans to add eight more drug courts to its already existent 10, and the problem does not appear to be decreasing quickly. A staggering 8,432 people entered Illinois drug rehabilitation treatment centers for addiction to cocaine in 2009. However, the state has an even bigger problem with heroin. During this same year, 19,245 people needed an Illinois drug rehabilitation treatment center to help end their addictions to heroin. Prescription painkillers containing opiates were another reason to enter an Illinois drug rehabilitation treatment center with 1,668 people doing so in 2009.

Illinois drug rehabilitation centers offer treatment that separates people into distinct groups. Different groups will have different problems that need to be addressed in rehab, and this is the reason that rehab treatment centers offer treatment in this manner. For example, adult rehabilitation treatment does not address the issue of peer pressure, but peer pressure is a major reason that teens begin to take drugs. Illinois drug rehabilitation treatment centers have separate counseling sessions for adults and teens that address their very different issues.

Different people within groups also have different circumstances that need to be addressed. For example, some people have a loving environment that they can return to after a day of receiving counseling for their drug addictions at an Illinois drug rehabilitation treatment center. These people would benefit from an outpatient program that does not take them away from their support systems. People entering Illinois drug rehabilitation centers have the option of inpatient or outpatient services and any type of therapy that addresses their specific needs.
